As an adult, it’s already incredibly difficult to deal with cancer. Whether it’s yourself or a loved one, the burden of coping with cancer is an overwhelming and highly emotional experience. For a child, the experience can be incredibly confusing and downright frightening, and adults can find it difficult to help meet a child’s emotional needs during this time.
2and2 is working with Camp Quality, a children’s family cancer charity, to develop an honest and positive cancer information app where children can find age appropriate, responsible, and interactive answers to common questions about cancer.
Empowering children to deal with cancer
One of the greatest unmet needs identified for all children is easily accessible, age appropriate information about cancer – in particular, those who have questions on how they can support and better understand their friends, siblings and parents’ journey through cancer.
For families who have a child with cancer, it’s the siblings who have the most unmet needs around age appropriate information on cancer, or friends who understand what they are going through. For children who have a parent with cancer, it’s critical they have a safe place to share and ‘normalise’ their feelings with other children experiencing a similar situation, and age appropriate information to dispel the misconceptions they may have about cancer. For teachers and social workers, cancer education is critical in helping support children through difficult times.
Taking children on a journey
Designed to be an honest and positive educational experience, the Camp Quality app is a fun, interactive tool that will help empower children to deal with cancer, and reduce the fear and helplessness children often feel when someone they know has cancer.
Featuring a character who appears regularly within the learning journey to help users, kids can decide what kind of questions they want to know the answers to and choose their own path through the app, progressing at their own pace and in the privacy of their own space. As well as information and exercises, the app will also provide kids with strategies and exercises to help children interact within their family and school environment.
Our team has loved working on this so far, and we’ve developed some great artwork for Camp Quality so far, which you can look at below. We can’t wait to share more as we go through the journey of developing this app!
